OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

In the culmination of 5 exciting days of curling action that included 21 teams competing over 22 draws; Sunday morning at the Soo Curlers Club in Sault Sate. Marie marked the close of the 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships.

In the mixed division, Algoma University was trying to repeat as champions as they took on the Fleming College Peterborough. Much like the round robin game between the two, Fleming Peterborough capitalized early to make their claim to the championship. Algoma battled valiantly but Fleming executed a key raise take out in the fifth end to hold off the Thunderbirds charge. The Knights held off the Thunderbirds to win 9-4.

On the women’s side, Mohawk College were looking to keep a perfect record as they matched up against Confederation College. The Thunderhawks opened up an early lead but the Mountaineers surged back as the match went on. In the 7th end with Mohawk lying 3, Confederation just missed a difficult raise take out to give up 3. Mohawk College completed their perfect week winning 8-3.

With men’s, Fleming College Peterborough faced off against Niagara College in a re-match of the 2009 final. From the opening end Fleming Peterborough was on their game as they kept the game clean making it difficult for Niagara to produce any scoring opportunities. In the end Fleming just was on their game as they won the championship and the battle of the Knights 5-1.

In closing, on behalf of the Soo Curlers Club, the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, Algoma University, Sault College and the City of Sault Ste. Marie we would like to congratulate all the athletes that took part in this year’s OCAA Curling Championships.
