MEDAL ROUNDS ALL SET AT OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Saturday saw the end of the round robin portion of the OCAA championships at Soo Curlers with multiple teams looking to punch their ticket to the medal round Sunday. Tiebreakers loomed large on the ice and after the rocks came to rest after six draws of play, the playoff matches took shape.

In the mixed division, skip Kyle Mills and his Humber Hawks remained perfect finishing play with a 5-0 record and a berth in the gold medal game. There he will face the winners of the semi-final where Cassandra Lewin's Algonquin Thunder (4-1) take on the Niagara Nights (3-2) led by Cody Smith. All three teams are on a roll as they all won both draws to end round robin play.

On the women's side, Shannon Kee's Fanshawe Falcons separated themselves from the field winning both draws to sit in first place with a 6-1 record and a place in the gold medal game. A potential multiple tie breaker situation was averted as the Sault Cougars with Megan St. Amand at skip bounced back from a morning loss to win in the afternoon to finish second at 5-2. They will face Kendall Haymes' Mohawk Mountaineer foursome who also finished with an identical 5-2 record in the semi-final Sunday morning.

The final draw in men's play saw two one-loss teams face off, as Kelly Schuh's Fansahwe Falcons took on the host Sault Cougars and its skip Chris Glibota. When the last rock came to a stop the Sault Cougars captured a tough fought 7-4 win to secure their spot in the gold medal game with a 6-1 record. Fanshawe (5-2) will take on Bob Meijer's Humber hawks who won both games on the final day to finish 5-2 and qualify for the semi-final.

The hardware will be handed out and provincial champions will be crowned Sunday with semi-finals set for 9 a.m. followed by the gold medal games at 12:30 p.m. in all three divisions.

All draws are held at Soo Curlers and live end by end action can be found on the Cougars website at www.saultcollege.ca/services/athletics or follow competition on Saultsports.com.
