MOVING DAY AT THE 2014 CCAA CURLING NATIONALS

MOVING DAY AT THE 2014 CCAA CURLING NATIONALS

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Friday was "moving day" at the 2014 CCAA Curling National Championships at Soo Curlers with three draws and countless combinations of teams vying for those elusive playoff berths. The final draw of the day gave the faithful crowd two extra end games that went well into the night.

On the ice, Kaitlyn Sherrer's Red Deer rink were taken to extra ends in the last draw of the day but her last rock draw for one to win 9-8 and seal the fate of MacEwan University who dropped out of the playoff race. The Queens claimed top spot after round robin play with a 6-1 record and a place in Saturday night's gold medal game. Elsewhere the rest of the field was all in contention with multiple tiebreaking scenarios taking shape but when the dust settled the playoff picture materialized. Humber College with skip Grace Esquega punched its ticket to the semi-finals with a steal of two and a 9-7 victory over Karynn Flory's NAIT Ooks, who were forced into the tiebreaker. There they will face Kendall Haymes' Mohawk College foursome who claimed the second tiebreaker spot by defeating the Seneca Sting led by Megan Van Huyse 10-3 earlier in the night.

On the men's side, Jordan Steinke's MacEwan University squad finished the day with three wins - becoming the only undefeated team in the field as they punched their ticket to the gold medal game Saturday with a convincing 8-3 victory over the Humber Hawks. The other playoff seeds are a little more interesting as the Nait Ooks skipped by Matt Brown lost their last draw to James Freeman and his Mohawk Mountaineers 9-7. Although the Ooks claimed their spot in the semi-final, the Mountaineers' win and a loss by Chris Glibota's Sault College squad would force a tiebreaker. Glibota's host Cougars took one in the 10th end versus Fanshawe College to force an extra end, then stole a single to claim the final men's spot in the semi-final and eliminating the Mountaineers.

So Championship Saturday begins with the women's tiebreaker between Mohawk and NAIT at 9:30 a.m. at Soo Curlers. The semi-finals go at 2 p.m. followed by the gold medal games at 7 p.m.
