MIXED RESULTS FOR MOHAWK IN DAY 1 OF HUMBER BONSPEIL

TORONTO - Mohawk curling teams had mixed results on day one of the third annual Humber Curling Bonspiel at the Weston Golf and Country Club on Friday.

The men's team, skipped by James Freeman picked up two straight wins. In the opener versus Fleming, the teams traded points the entire game before the Knights from Peterborough, Ont., took a single point in the ninth end to lead by two. However, the Mountaineers, with the hammer for the final end, responded with four and the victory.

In the second match, the Mohawk men ran Fanshawe out of rocks in the final end for another win.

Other members of the Freeman foursome included vice Troy Woodland, second Logan James and lead Jared Zuliani. Wes Steen is the spare for the Mohawk men, coached by Betty Wackley.

The Mohawk women were 0-2 on opening day. They bowed 10-4 to Fleming in game one, despite leading 4-0 after three ends. Coach Matt Kimber said the Mountaineer women didn't adjust to the ice conditions and had trouble making the shots they needed.

In that first game, Avery Thomas was skip with Mackenzie Thomas at vice, Paige Fursman at second and Reagan Teeple throwing lead stones.

In the second game, Autumn Jackson took over for Thomas as Mohawk skip, but the reigning OCAA champions from Fanshawe were strong and romped to a 12-3 decision over the Mountaineers, last year's silver medalists.

Play continues Saturday at 9 a.m., as Mohawk faces host Humber in both the men's and women's sections. At 1:15 p.m. they'll both meet St. Clair and then at 5:15 p.m. it'll be Mohawk versus Seneca, again in both men's and women's play.
