FANSHAWE GETS NOD AS NATIONAL CURLING HOST

OTTAWA - The Fanshawe Falcons have been awarded the 2016 CCAA Curling National Championships.

The bid was approved at the CCAA winter board meeting in Ottawa today. The event will take place in London, Ont., March 23-26, 2016.

While the City of London has hosted numerous national events, including the Brier in 2011, Fanshawe College has also successfully hosted and supported many OCAA provincial events in addition to hosting the CCAA men's and women's soccer (twice) and badminton national championships.

"This national championship will add to the outstanding resume that the City of London has established in hosting both national and world class events," said Nathan McFadden, manager of athletics at Fanshawe. "It will also provide a great opportunity for our nationally recognized curling program to compete for a national championship in front of a supportive home crowd and help grow the sport of curling within our community and region."

The tournament will take place at the Highland Curling Club, which pride itself on having the best ice and the top ice-making team in Canada. With the addition of a new ice plant in 2002, plus major club house renovations in 2011-12, Highland has become the premier curling club in southwestern Ontario.

"The CCAA teams that qualify for this championship can expect high quality venues unlike any they have experienced before at this level," said McFadden. "From the exceptional upscale facility at the Highland Country Club to the uniqueness of the newly renovated Delta London Armouries, participants will be provided with an outstanding experience while being hosted by Fanshawe during their stay in London."

The 2015 CCAA Curling National Championships will be hosted by Olds College in Olds, Alta., March 25-28.
