MOHAWK LOSES A CLOSE ONE IN CCAA MEN'S CURLING

LONDON, Ont. - Sault College scored one in the ninth end and then stole a single in the 10th, to nip Logan James' Mohawk men's foursome 8-7, at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Curling National Championships at London Highland on Wednesday.

The narrow defeat dropped the Mountaineers' record to 1-2 after the first day's play.

Mohawk got off to a great start, stealing three in the first end. But the Cougars rallied to tie with two in the second end and a steal of one in the third. That started a see-saw battle until the game's conclusion.

The Mountaineers went ahead 4-3 with a single in the fourth end, but the Sault regained the lead with a deuce before the fifth end break.

Mohawk made it 5-5, scoring one in the sixth.

The Sault replied with a single in the seventh.

The Mountaineers forged ahead again when they tallied twice in the eighth end, but the Cougars drew even in the ninth and won with their steal of one in the final end.

Mohawk's next action comes Thursday. The Mountaineers meet championship host Fanshawe at 8 a.m., then play Fleming at 4 p.m.

The CCAA awards banquet is Thursday night, then play resumes Friday morning. The medal games will be Saturday.

The Mountaineers will next be featured, on-line, Friday at at 12 p.m. when they play Red Deer.
