FANSHAWE MEN'S CURLING TEAM WINS CCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

CAMROSE, Alta. - On Saturday in Camrose, Alta., the Fanshawe men's curling team won the 2017 CCAA Curling National Championship with a 7-4 win over Mohawk College. The championship was hosted by Augustana University. The victory marks the men's curling team's third national championship in program history.

After going 5-2 in round robin play, the Falcons men's curling team came out strong in the semi-final with a 13-5 win over the Humber Hawks in eight ends. The victory avenged a loss to the Hawks in the OCAA final in February at the OCAA championships. Fanshawe then defeated the Mountaineers 7-4 to win the gold medal.

The team is skipped by Charlie Richard (Woodstock, Ont.) with vice Tyler Twining (Owen Sound, Ont.), second Brady St. Louis (St. Marys, Ont.), lead Brandon Twining (Owen Sound, Ont.) and lead Eric Jones (Mildmay, Ont.). St. Louis and Twining were named CCAA All-Stars and Fanshawe's DJ Ronaldson was named the CCAA Coach of the Year.

The Fanshawe women's team will also be flying home with medals around their neck as they captured the CCAA bronze medal with an 8-7 victory over NAIT. Earlier in the day, the women's team had dropped a tough 7-5 decision to Red Deer in the semi-final. The Falcons had finished first in the round robin with a 6-1 record.

Fanshawe skip Sara Westman (St. Thomas, Ont.) and lead Isabelle Allan (Carp, Ont.) were both named CCAA All-Stars, with vice Kaitlyn Poirier (Sioux Lookout, Ont.), second Janelle Shapton (Exeter, Ont.), and second Samantha Lees (St. Thomas, Ont.) rounding out the team. The head coach is Barry Westman and associate coach is Shirley Westman.
