DURHAM SET TO HOST OCAA WOMEN'S FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

OSHAWA, Ont. - The top four women’s fastball teams in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) will be in Oshawa this weekend as Durham College is set to host the 2010 OCAA Women’s Fastball Championship at Durham Field from October 15-16, 2010.

“We are very excited to host such a great event that features the top fastball teams from across Ontario,” said Durham College athletic director Ken Babcock. “With the provincial title up for grabs, teams will be leaving it all on the field making for some exciting fastball action over the two days. The event will be a great opportunity to showcase our campus facilities, hospitality and the Oshawa community to the rest of the province.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the OCAA women’s fastball championship. Durham College has won the provincial title 14 times, but St. Clair enters the weekend as the two-time defending champions.

“We know that we will have to be at our best in order to win the championship,” said Durham College head coach Jim Nemish. “We have had this weekend marked on our calendar as soon as the schedule came out. We cannot wait to take to the field on Friday.”

The two-day double knockout championship will highlight the top four teams in the OCAA battling it out for the provincial title. The event will kick-off on Thursday, October 14 with the OCAA Championship awards banquet, taking place at the Holiday Inn in Oshawa at 7 p.m.

The regular season champions and host college Durham Lords (10-0) will begin game action on Friday when they play the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-9) at 11 a.m. Mohawk booked a spot into the championship with an 11-1 win over Conestoga in the qualifier on Tuesday night.

The second game of the first round will feature the two-time defending OCAA champion St. Clair Saints (7-2) against the Seneca Sting (6-6) at 1 p.m. The teams finished second and third respectively in the OCAA regular season.

The gold medal game is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
