O'QUINN WINS TOP AWARD IN OCAA WOMEN'S FASTBALL

MARKHAM, Ont. - Humber College's Jessica O'Quinn is the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's fastball player of the year. She received the award in a ceremony held in Markham, Ont. on Thursday evening.

O'Quinn (Etobicoke) led the OCAA with a .591 batting average, setting a new single season record of 29 runs batted in. O'Quinn also tied the OCAA single game record of six RBI on three separate occasions. She was second in league scoring crossing the plate 21 times, and was third among OCAA players with 26 hits.

O'Quinn was also a threat from the pitching rubber. She recorded a 5-0 record with a 3.00 ERA, striking out 19 batters in 37.1 innings of work.

Humber teammate Natalie Stoberman (Mississauga) is the OCAA rookie of the year. Stoberman had a .545 batting average with 18 hits, scoring a dozen runs while driving in 10.

Durham third baseman Melissa Semeniuk (Ajax) is the OCAA's top batter for 2012. She set a new regular season record with 31 hits, resulting in a .544 batting average. She drove in 24 runs, and scored 20 times.

Durham teammate Kristine Miles (Whitby) is the OCAA's top pitcher. Her stellar 1.71 ERA resulted in a 5-0 record. Miles struck out 36 in 28.2 innings of work. Control was never an issue, as she walked just four batters.

Humber's Bob Action is also an OCAA major award winner. The 2012 coach of the year has put together a championship caliber program in just its second year of existence. The Hawks finished in second place with a 13-2 regular season record, one game behind front-running Durham. Humber defeated the Lords 17-9 on Sept. 27, ending Durham's 29-game win streak against OCAA competition.

Each team nominates two OCAA all-stars, headlined by O'Quinn. She is joined by twin sister Jacqueline O'Quinn of Humber; Semeniuk and Samantha Bryant-Officer (Mount Forest) of Durham; Hillary Heighton (Innerkip) and Tori Taylor (Kitchener) of Conestoga; Stephanie Accomando (Hamilton) and Nicole Leitch (Erin) of Mohawk; Jordan Beauchesne (Windsor) and Alexa Georgiou (Windsor) of St. Clair; as well as Natalie Chiarotto (Lefroy) and Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville) of Seneca.
