SPORT FORMERLY KNOWN AS FASTBALL
The most significant change to women's fastball in 2014-15 is its name change.
The OCAA is making the switch from fastball to softball to better reflect the national and international designation of the sport. The play on the field, however, remains the same.
What's old is new again as the sport was known as softball for its first 19 seasons of its OCAA existence.
OCAA TITLES COME IN THREES
Since returning to OCAA women's softball in 2011-12, the Humber Hawks have won three consecutive medals, including the last two OCAA championships.
Humber looks to match a feat only achieved on four other occasions. A trio programs have won three straight OCAA women's softball championships, including Durham (twice, from 1982 to 1984 and again from 2002 to 2004), Seneca (1985 to 1987) and Conestoga (1988 to 1990).
SEVENTH HEAVEN
The Fanshawe Falcons will make their debut in women's softball this fall.
Don't discount the Falcons as the last team to make its debut in OCAA women's fastball has yet to miss out on an OCAA medal (see Humber above).
With three extra games on the schedule for each team, the chances are good that some OCAA regular season records will fall.
FROM SEVEN TO ELEVEN
Alexa Georgiou made OCAA history last season, becoming the first pitcher to record double-digit victories in a regular season.
Georgiou's 11 wins topped the previous season-high of nine set by Danielle Smith of Durham in 2006.
In 74.2 innings, Georgiou struck out 91 batters while walking just 12. Her 10 allowed earned runs resulted in an ERA of 0.94. The 21013 OCAA player of the year looks to improve on these totals in 2014.
