OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE

One no-hitter is a rarity. But two on one day?

St. Clair Saints pitchers Jenna Pierce (London, Ont.) and Alexa Georgiou (Windsor, Ont.) combined to throw back-to-back no-hitters in a doubleheader sweep of Mohawk, which included Georgiou's perfect game.

Pierce struck out three Mountaineers, while allowing two walks in five innings of work. Pierce's ERA is now a stingy 0.96.

Georgiou struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced, and now leads the OCAA with 45 strikeouts. Her ERA is 1.96.

With pitching like this, no wonder St. Clair has won nine straight. At 10-2, the Saints lead Humber by two games on top of the OCAA standings.

HUMMING ALONG

After back-to-back losses earlier in the month, Humber has responded by winning four of its next five to keep pace with St. Clair.

Humber had a memorable nine-inning 15-11 victory over Durham. Fifth-year third baseman Julia Catalano (Brampton, Ont.) went 4-for-5, including a triple, while driving in four runs. Catalano also scored twice.

Humber hosts St. Clair in a key doubleheader on Saturday. With St. Clair defeating Humber 10-0 earlier in the month, the Hawks will be looking for a sweep to leapfrog the Saints, and gain a potential tiebreaker.

BIRDS OF A DIFFERENT FEATHER

The Conestoga Condors had their first taste of adversity this season with back-to-back losses to Humber and St. Clair, but responded with a 4-2 win against Fanshawe.

Conestoga has relied heavily on the arm of Lauren Ruf (Cambridge, Ont.), and she has responded with a 6-0 record and ERA of 2.48 in 40 innings of work.

With Humber facing St. Clair, one way or another Conestoga can pick up ground by taking care of business in its games. The Condors play Seneca for a single, and Mohawk in a doubleheader.

GO FOURTH

The top four teams in the OCAA standings advance to the double-knockout tournament to decide the 2014 provincial champion. That makes Saturday's single game between Fanshawe and Durham all the more meaningful.

Currently, Fanshawe trails Durham by one win for fourth place, but the Lords have four games in hand. Durham also swept a doubleheader against Fanshawe earlier in the season, giving the Lords the season series and a potential tiebreaker.

If Fanshawe is to keep its post-season hopes alive, a win Saturday will go a long way in making those dreams a reality.
