ST. CLAIR WINS OCAA WOMEN'S SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

ST. CLAIR WINS OCAA WOMEN'S SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair Saints are the 2014 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's softball champions after a 7-5 victory over Conestoga on Saturday afternoon at Mic Mac Park to claim its first crown since 2009.

This is the fourth OCAA title for St. Clair in softball since the program started in 2002. Alexa Georgiou (Windsor, Ont.) was named most valuable player for the championship tournament pitching complete games in all three wins for the Saints. She was also the leading hitter in the tournament finishing with a .727 batting average led all players with six RBI over the two days, adding a home run.

St. Clair went undefeated in the tournament, narrowly defeating Humber 1-0 in Friday's opener followed by a 9-2 win over Durham to earn a berth in the final.

The Saints jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Conestoga, but the Condors rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth to pull within one. It was as close as Conestoga would get, as St. Clair added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and closed out the Condors in the seventh.

Despite the loss, it was Conestoga's best finish in women's softball since 1998 when it also won a silver medal. Conestoga were bronze medalists last year.

Durham was awarded the OCAA bronze medal. The Lords defeated Conestoga 13-3 to begin the tournament before losing to St. Clair 9-2. Durham lost its rematch with Conestoga 8-5 in the bronze medal game.

Georgiou threw 21 innings in two days with a 2.33 ERA. Teammate Lisa Ternosky (Windsor, Ont.) was named a championship all-star batting .556. Conestoga's Tori Taylor (Kitchener, Ont.) and Brittany Bell (New Hamburg, Ont.) were also named all-stars with batting averages of .357 and .308, respectively.

Rounding out the championship all-stars are Durham's Katrina Gammie (Guelph, Ont.), batting .444 with six RBI and a home run, and Humber pitcher Amanda Van de Graaf (Mississauga, Ont.) who had an ERA of 2.00 over 14 innings in two hard luck losses.
