OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

GREEN AND GOLD

If the opening weekend of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is any indication of the season to come, then it should be an exciting race between the defending champion St. Clair Saints and Durham Lords.

Both teams are 3-1 through four games, including a split in their head-to-head battle in Windsor on Sunday. Durham rallied to pull out a 4-3 win in the opener with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. St. Clair blanked the Lords in the second game winning 7-0.

Durham first-year pitcher Caitlyn Omelanchuk (Whitby) kept her Lords in the first game allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings of work. All three runs scored in the fifth, shutting down the Saints the rest of the way.

St. Clair outfielders Jenna Pierce (London) and Megan Lumley (Windsor) contributed three hits each in the second game. They combined for four runs and four RBI.

These teams do not meet again until Oct. 17 in Oshawa in what has the makings of an important doubleheader.

RECORD GAME

The Conestoga Condors set an OCAA record on Sunday at the expense of the Mohawk Mountaineers.

After going to extra innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader, Mohawk ran out of gas in the second game as Conestoga scored 32 runs, a new single game record for one team. Both teams combined for 36 runs, also a new single game record.

Conestoga's Brittany Bell (New Hamburg) has had a strong start to the season with a dozen hits and 11 RBI in four games. She has also scored nine runs, and has an impressive .750 batting average. Not only does she have a four-game hit streak, she has a four-game multiple-hit streak, with at least two hits in each game she has played.

Bell's next opportunity to swing the aluminum comes Tuesday against Humber.

THE HAWK

The Fanshawe Falcons may have dropped their opening doubleheader against Durham, but centrefielder Kady Hawkins (London) disproved any fears about a sophomore slump.

Hawkins, the reigning OCAA rookie of the year and all-star, had two hits and a stolen base in each game. She also scored once, and is tied for the OCAA's second-best batting average of .571.

Last year Hawkins batted .500 with 30 hits, good for second in the league.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY

The Humber Hawks and Seneca Sting are the only teams that have yet to play a regular season game, thanks to a doubleheader rainout on Sunday. No makeup date has been announced as of yet.

This will change over the next two days (weather permitting) with Humber visiting Conestoga on Tuesday, and Seneca hosting Mohawk on Wednesday.

Humber (10-7) was a final four team last season, missing out on an OCAA medal. Seneca struggled to a 4-14 records, with hopes of turning things around in 2015.
