MOHAWK 10, SENECA 7

TORONTO - The Mohawk women's softball team has ended an almost four year losing streak after splitting a pair of OCAA games at Seneca College in North York on Wednesday.

The Mountaineers last win was over Conestoga, a 9-7 decision Sept. 27, 2011. Including their first three games this season, the team ended a 57-game losing streak.

Seneca won the opener 2-1, as Aimee Leduc pitched a complete game and struck out seven for the Mountaineers, but was tagged with the defeat. Becky Rabchuk (Oakville), a fifth-year veteran, scored the lone run for Mohawk, whose new head coach Todd Bannister said his team got the bats on the ball but the Sting played a strong defensive game.

The big win came in the nightcap, as the Mountaineers prevailed 10-7. Once again, Leduc, a third-year player from Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame in Princeton, again went the route, this time for the victory.

The score was even 7-7 going to the sixth inning when Sarah Bell (Stoney Creek) smacked a two-run homer over over the fence, to drive in the winning runs. Courtney Lukawiecki, a first-year player from North Park in Brantford, and Rabchuk each scored three times.

As for snapping the long losing streak, coach Bannister said it was very exciting for the players. "The excitement of winning a competitive game is really contagious," said Bannister. "A couple of third year players were in tears, after breaking the long winless streak."
