OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

PARITY DOWN

There will be no undefeated team in OCAA women's softball this season with every team suffering at least one loss in the opening 10 days.

But it has the makings of a heck of a race for the top four positions in the standings and direct entry into the OCAA provincials.

Defending champion St. Clair sits a top those standings at the moment having won six games, but with four losses, the door is open for no less than four teams to overtake the Saints. Durham and Humber both have only one loss, and with several games in hand.

Fanshawe is 2-3, with both wins coming in a doubleheader against St. Clair, including a 14-4 victory. Second-year centre fielder Kady Hawkins (London) tallied five hits in the two victories, driving in three runs while scoring a pair. She now has a five-game multi-hit streak, getting at least two hits in each game. These are undoubtedly the most significant wins in the two-year history of the Fanshawe women's softball program, but now the Falcons need to prove their current record is only an abnormality.

How tight are things in the OCAA? Conestoga and Durham both have the longest current win streaks - at two games.

With each team playing an extra half-dozen games this season, there is still a lot of softball left to be played. Who ultimately wins the OCAA championship is anyone's guess.

MOHAWK 57

The Mohawk Mountaineers had reason for a post-game celebration for the first time since September, 2011, ending a 57-game losing streak with a 9-7 win over Seneca last Wednesday.

First-year infielder Courtney Lukawiecki (Brantford) swung a hot bat for the Mountaineers going 3-for-4, including a double, scoring three runs while also driving in a run. She also stole a base.

Mohawk came close to a doubleheader sweep, being edged out in the opener 2-1.

Although there have been some setbacks for the Mountaineers in 2015, there have also been plenty of positive signs for a program looking to regain its top form when they won 17 OCAA medals between 1990 and 2010.

STANDINGS SHAKE-UP

Three regular season games were forfeited by the Conestoga Condors due to their use of an ineligible player.

As a result, the OCAA standings are different than once appeared. Mohawk picked up a pair of wins, while another victory was added to Humber's tally.

Conestoga now has the most losses in the OCAA with six, but to its credit, bounced back with a doubleheader sweep of Seneca on Sunday.

With 16 games remaining, there is plenty of time for the Condors (2-6) to soar back to the top four of the OCAA standings, which are given invites to the OCAA championship tournament.
