ST. CLAIR WOMEN'S SOFTBALL SPLIT OPENING GAMES AT PROVINCIALS

KITCHENER, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's softball team opened with a narrow 5-4 victory over Humber College (Etobicoke) at the OCAA provincial championship tournament Friday afternoon in Kitchener, Ont., but fell 8-4 to Durham College (Oshawa) in their next game.

The Saints now face Fanshawe College (London) Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game but a win would advance them to the gold medal final. St. Clair has assured themselves of no less than a bronze medal in the double-knockout format as one of the final three remaining teams in contention.

In their opening win the Saints scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead over Humber.  Humber tied the game 4-4 in the fourth inning but St. Clair responded with a single in the bottom half and were able to hang on for the victory.

Allison Telfer (Windsor, Ont./FJ Brennan) collected the win on the mound for St. Clair pitching the final three innings in relief holding Humber scoreless while spreading out four hits. Megan Lumley (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) was named St. Clair's Player of the Game with a pair of singles to go with an RBI and a run scored.

St. Clair let a 4-0 lead slip away in the fifth inning of its second game allowing Durham to score four runs and eventually four more runs in the seventh inning. The Saints surrendered four fielding errors which resulted in four Durham unearned runs to score. Jenna Pierce (London) was named St. Clair's Player of the Game going 3-for-3 at the plate including a double and two singles.
