MOHAWK 7, FANSHAWE 6

The Mohawk women's softball team scored a pair of victories over the Fanshawe Falcons Wednesday (Sept. 27) to stay in the hunt for a berth in the OCAA Championship tournament.

In the opening game, the Mountaineers spotted Fanshawe a 5-0 lead, with Amber Preszcator's three run double in the second inning being the big blow for the Falcons.

But Mohawk pecked away at their deficit and buoyed by a three run fourth inning and a two run fifth, they managed to take the lead. Fanshawe tied the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning.

However, with one out in the home half of that inning, Shanien O'Neill hit a rope to right-centre field for a walk off homer and a 7-6 Mohawk victory.

Aimee Leduc picked up the win.

While things cooled down on Hamilton Mountain, the action on the field was red hot. Mohawk scored seven times in the second inning and three times in the fourth en route to a 14-10 win.

A five run fifth inning followed by another run in the sixth frame by the Falcons made things a bit tense, but the Mountaineers settled down and quickly disposed of the visitors in the seventh inning.

Once again, Leduc was the winner, but she needed some relief help and got it in the form of rookie Andie Bomberry.

With the two wins, Mohawk improved their record to 6-8, moving into a fourth place tie with Conestoga. The Mountaineers will visit the Condors October 5. But before that, they are off to face the first place  St. Clair Saints Saturday (Sept. 30), then they come home to meet the Seneca Sting Tuesday (Oct. 3).

Fanshawe saw its record slip to 4-10.
