OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 17.

Ben Fillmore
School: Niagara
Program: Sales and Marketing
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Port Dover, Ont.
Taking part in the men's volleyball OCAA crossover game on Feb. 16 at home against Canadore, Fillmore executed his job as setter tremendously. In the four-set win, the fifth-year student-athlete had 33 assists as he set up his teammates all match long. Because of his great passing, nearly four Knights had double-digit kills. Leading the way in kills for the Knights was Elijah Bugiardini (Hamilton) who was able to smash home 17 of Fillmore's sets. Adding to his impressive match, Fillmore also contributed in other areas of the court as he totalled two kills and six digs.

Anh Hoang
School: George Brown
Program: Hotel Management
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Vietnam
For the second consecutive season, Hoang is the OCAA women's singles gold medalist, going a perfect 7-0 at provincials. She becomes the 11th OCAA student-athlete to successfully defend the women's singles gold medal, and the first since 2017. Hoang was also a key factor in the George Brown women's team earning its second consecutive team title at provincials. Hoang's next goal is to improve on last season's national silver medal as she competes at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships in March.

Jana Kucera
School: St. Clair
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Chatham, Ont.
With two strong games this weekend, Kucera wrapped up the OCAA regular season scoring title, finishing with a 20.2 points per game average which is the fourth highest in Saints history. She becomes the seventh St. Clair women's player to win the OCAA scoring title and the first since Shannon Kennedy led the league in 2014-15. In back-to-back wins at Sault Feb. 16 and 17, the second-year guard scored 50 points, adding 14 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. St. Clair (12-8) will now compete in the OCAA crossovers for a berth in the OCAA championship.

Ayubu Touray
School: Humber
Program: General Arts & Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Touray is perfect teammate, both persistent and supportive. Two years in a row, he was unable to crack the Humber line-up, including losing his spot just minutes before play began two years ago, and then leaving the team prior to the championships last year to do missionary work. He went on to be the biggest cheerleader for the team. This year Touray got his chance, and teamed with Arpit Taneja to win the OCAA men's doubles gold medal at provincials. He will now have the opportunity to go to his first CCAA national championship in March.

Tyler Twining
School: Fanshawe
Program: Design Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Owen Sound, Ont.
Twining helped lead Fanshawe to a second consecutive OCAA men's team gold medal last weekend at the curling provincials. Fanshawe needed an extra end to defeat previously undefeated Sault 6-4 in the finale. Twining was named an OCAA First-Team All-Star for his excellent play throughout the championship. Fanshawe's men's team has reached the podium in each of the last 10 provincials, including the gold medal three of the last four years. Twining and his teammates will now play for national gold in Fredericton, N.B., in March.

Rachel Wong
School: Toronto Mississauga
Program: Communication, Culture, Information and Technology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Hong Kong
In her second year at UTM, Wong was named OCAA Women's Badminton Player of the year, an All-Canadian and OCAA All-Star before taking the silver medal in women's singles play at provincials. Wong won four of her five round robin matches, only losing to eventual gold medalist Anh Hoang of George Brown. Wong is now a two-time OCAA medalist, winning bronze in women's singles last year. Wong will now compete at the 2019 CCAA Badminton National Championships being played in Bible Hill, N.S. in March.
