OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 21.

Ashley Black
School: Durham
Program: Human Resources
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Waterloo, Ont.
Black, who was named OCAA Pitcher of the Year and an OCAA League All-Star on Thursday, was named both a Championship All-Star and MVP at OCAA provincials. The fourth-year human resources student went 2-0 pitching a pair of complete games. She allowed five earned runs in 14 innings of work while going 1-for-1 with a walk, run and RBI in Saturday's gold medal game, a 6-2 victory over St. Clair. During the regular season, Black was second among OCAA players with a 1.87 ERA and the co-leader with 60 strikeouts. She had a 10-1 record pitching a team-high 71 innings.

Julia Jajkowska
School: Cambrian
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Sudbury, Ont.
Jajkowska was Cambrian's top goal scorer in her first season of OCAA action with five to her credit, including a pair of multi-goal games. But it was her sixth which helped lift the Golden Shield to the OCAA championship. Scoring early in Cambrian's playoff crossover against Fleming on Sunday, the goal held up in a 1-0 victory. A high-spirited player, Jajkowska is easily recognizable on the pitch by her pink cleats. Barring a sudden change in wardrobe, those shoes will be on display later this week in Toronto, as Cambrian takes on Seneca in an OCAA quarter-final.

Brendon Lyons
School: Humber
Program: Business Administration
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Bolton, Ont.
Lyons had himself quite a provincial championship, and did so as both a pitcher and position player. In two games as a position player, he batted .750, with seven RBI and two walks. As a pitcher, he threw a three-hit complete game shutout of five-time defending gold medalist St. Clair, striking out nine and earning Humber a direct trip to the championship final where the Hawks won their first-ever crown. Lyons was selected as Player of the Game in the game he pitched, and then was selected as both a Championship All-Star and MVP.

Alyssa Stoddart
School: Fanshawe
Program: Golf and Club Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Orangeville, Ont.
Stoddart finished in third place in the women's individual event at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships in Alberta last week, bringing home Fanshawe's first-ever national golf medal. Stoddart set a new Fanshawe record for best score as she shot plus-17 over the four day tournament, including an impressive three-under par 69 on Day 3. Stoddart was also named a CCAA Championship All-Star as well as All-Canadian. Earlier in the month, she was the female golfer ever to win the individual gold medal at the OCAA championship.

Conner Watt
School: Humber
Program: Professional Golf Management
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Watt, the 2017 OCAA men's individual golf champion, shot eight-under for the four-day tournament to claim the sliver medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships in Alberta last week. Watt had four consecutive sub-par rounds, with his best being a four-under 68 in Round 2. His one-under 71 in the final round placed him one stroke ahead of the bronze medalist from Quebec. Watt was a double silver medalist as he and his Humber teammates finished second in the men's team competition.

Jamari Whyte
School: Toronto Mississauga
Program: Digital Enterprise Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Whyte scored four key goals for UTM in the past two games which has helped advance the Eagles to the OCAA championship. He scored a pair of goals in a 6-0 win at Cambrian on Oct. 14, the regular season finale for both teams which clinched a post-season berth for the Eagles. In UTM's crossover playoff game at Redeemer on Saturday, Whyte scored another two goals in a 5-1 victory. He led the Eagles with six regular season goals. This is only the second time that the UTM Eagles have advanced to the OCAA championship in four years as a program.
