OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Mar. 15.

Alessia Da Silva
School: Seneca
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Indoor Soccer
Hometown: Vaughan, Ont.
Da Silva helped lead Seneca to an undefeated Pool A round robin record at the suspended OCAA provincials on Mar. 12. Da Silva scored three goals in three matches as Seneca played to a record of 2-0-1. Da Silva was one of four Seneca players who hit the mark in a 4-0 win over host Redeemer. She then scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Humber. Seneca played Mohawk to a 0-0 draw in the other match. Da Silva was named an East Division First-Team All-Star at the conclusion of the 2019 outdoor league season. Seneca was set to play Fanshawe in the semi-finals.

Matthew DaSilva
School: George Brown
Program: Construction Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Indoor Soccer
Hometown: Etobicoke, Ont.
DaSilva helped lead defending champion George Brown to an undefeated Pool B round robin record at the suspended OCAA provincials held at Redeemer on Mar. 12. DaSilva scored three goals in three matches as George Brown played to a record of 2-0-1, finishing in first place. DaSilva scored a pair of goals in a key 5-0 win over UTM, and had a single tally in a 3-3 draw versus St. Clair. DaSilva did not figure into the scoring in George Brown's 4-0 win over Sheridan. George Brown was set to play Fanshawe in the semi-finals, having won two of the past three championships.

Mattea Deleary
School: Fanshawe
Program: Early Childhood Leadership
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Ridgetown, Ont.
Deleary was named the Player of the Match in two of the four matches Fanshawe competed in at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Volleyball National Championship in Quebec City. The third-year middle recorded 14 points on 13 kills and a service ace in the national semi-finals, and 13 points on 11 kills and two blocks in the bronze medal match. Deleary also led the Falcons with a .457 kill percentage throughout the championship. Fanshawe fell just short of repeating as national medalists, settling for fourth in the nation.

Brittany Elson
School: Humber
Program: Broadcast TV and Videography
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Mount Albert, Ont.
Elson and her Humber teammates captured the national silver medal on Mar. 15 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association/Curling Canada College Curling Championships in Portage La Prairie, Man. For her efforts, the fourth-year lead was named a Championship First-Team All-Star. Humber finished with a record of 4-3 in the round robin, and defeated Concordia 11-2 in the national semi-finals. The Hawks fell short of gold with a 10-1 loss to Douglas in the finale. It marks Humber's first national medal in women's curling since 2015.

Joshua Fadare
School: Humber
Program: Broadcasting - Radio
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Markham, Ont.
Fadare and his Humber teammates captured the national silver medal this past week in Fredericton. The OCAA Rookie of the Year finished with a team-high 40 points on 35 kills, four aces, and a block in three matches at the championship. He was named a Championship First-Team All-Star for his efforts. Humber reached the national final for just the second time in 37 years, where Fadare was named Player of the Match for his 17 points on 14 kills, two service aces and a block. Humber swept its first two matches before losing in three sets to champion Capilano.

Owen Tester
School: Fanshawe
Program: Business
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Fort McMurray, Alta.
Tester was named a Championship Second-Team All-Star for his play at last week's nationals in Portage La Prairie, Man. The third-year second helped lead Fanshawe to a national bronze medal, its sixth Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association medal in nine years. The Falcons went 5-2 in the round robin, dropping a competitive 9-7 decision to OCAA rival Humber in the national semi-finals. Fanshawe rebounded nicely in the bronze medal match, defeating NAIT 12-5. Tester was also named a Championship Second-Team All-Star at last month's provincials.
