DOUBLE GOLD FOR DURHAM AT OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Durham Lords led from start to finish and took home the men’s and women’s gold medal in the team and individual competition at the 2005 OCAA Golf Championships, hosted by Durham College at Lakeridge Links Golf Course in Brooklin, Ont.

The Durham Lords men’s team used home course advantage to capture their second title in two seasons finishing eight strokes ahead of Humber College. The Lords squad of Will Mitchell, Tyler Martin, Jeremy Brimble and Mark Romanelli finished with a two-day score of 591.

Humber College rallied from behind and overtook Niagara College during final round play and finished second at 599. Niagara College finished third at 604.

In the men’s individual competition freshman Will Mitchell of Durham College used a final round 70 to take the gold medal and finish with a two-day total 143. Last year’s defending champion, Tyler Martin of Durham shot a tournament total 144 to take the silver along with teammate Jeremy Brimble. Meanwhile Chris MacDonald of St.Lawrence Kingston picked up the bronze medal finishing with a 146.

On the women’s side the Durham Lords led from wire-to-wire and carded a two-day total 336 to earn the gold medal for the first time in the schools history. The lady Lords squad was comprised of Stephanie Brown, Brittany Caldwell and Kate Hill. Humber College sinished second at 599 while Niagara was third at 604.

In the women’s individual competition a three-way tie was recorded at the end of the round with Stephanie Brown of Durham, Michelle Charron of St.Clair and Julie Van Every of Georgian finishing with matching two-day totals of 165. Stephanie Brown, a second year veteran of Durham was awarded the gold medal after posting a par on the first playoff hole. This was the first-ever women's individual gold medal for Durham.

Golfers are now set to prepare for the the 2005 CCAA Ping Open National Golf Championship hosted by St.Clair College, October 19-22 at the Fox Glen Golf Club in Windsor, ON. The OCAA will be well represented by a stellar field of golfers including all of this year’s OCAA Champions.

The OCAA governs intercollegiate sports and promotes physical activity in its member institutions through quality athletic and campus recreation programs. It offers 16 varsity sports to 30 member institutions throughout Ontario.
