HUMBER HAWKS WIN 2006 OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mother nature proved to be too much yesterday as inclement weather wiped out the second and final day of competition at the 2006 OCAA Golf Championships hosted by Fanshawe College at FireRock Golf Club. The course was deemed unplayable for competition following heavy and lengthy rain, forcing the results from day one to determine the champions.

Humber College swept the team competition as both teams had a great start to the Championship. The Humber men shot a first round 289 to win the title and lead the OCAA with most championships in golf at eleven titles. Meanwhile the Humber women picked up their fourth title after firing a first round 162.

In the men’s competition the defending champion Durham Lords were second at 295 while the Niagara Knights finished third at 301.

In the women’s team competition the Georgian Grizzlies were second at 171 while the host Fanshawe Falcons were third at 222.

In the men’s individual competition there was a three-way tie for the gold medal as first-year James Castle and second-year Ryan Willoughby of Humber and third-year Tyler Martin of Durham all shot matching 70’s in the first round of competition.

This is Tyler Martins second OCAA Golf Title as he won gold in 2004-05 and was the CCAA gold medallist last year. For the Humber teammates this is their first title at the OCAA Championships.

In the women’s individual competition fourth year veteran Hillary Salvian of the Humber Hawks won the gold medal after shooting a score of 79 in the first round. This is Salvians first OCAA gold medal.
