HUMBER REGAINS LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL DAY AT RCGA UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Humber Institute of Technology Hawks and the University of Victoria Vikes sit atop the standings heading into Friday’s final round of the 2007 Canadian University/College Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B.

In the men’s competition, Humber overtook the lead after a solid team round of 11-under par 277 to sit at 14-under through three rounds. First and second round leaders, University of British Columbia, dropped to second after posting a 7-over 295 on the day while the defending champions from the University of Victoria find themselves 11 strokes off the lead. The local favourites from the University of New Brunswick sit alone in seventh at 12-over.

The story of the day was Jud Whiteside of Waterloo, Ont. who set the course record 64, leading his University of Waterloo team back into contention and claiming second spot in the individual standings.

On the women’s side, the University of Victoria played their best round to date with a team-total 307 on the day to bump the four-time defending champions from UBC out of the lead heading into Friday’s final round.

Christine Spence continues to lead way for the lady Vikes after shooting even-par 72 for the third day in a row. Following the completion of Thursday’s third round, a cut was made to the low 10 male and 5 female teams.Final-round action wraps up Friday at Kingswood Park with starting times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (ASL).

A total of 158 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes from across Canada are competing this week in Fredericton, N.B. Competitors will compete for both team and individual titles. In total the field will is comprised of 21 men’s and 11 women’s teams.

The team championship will involve five-player teams competing over 72 holes with the top four individual scores counting towards the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be cut to the low 10 male and low five female teams. Any team within 15 shots of the lead will also make the cut. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.

As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions both the male and female achieving the low score after four rounds of play will earn an exemption into the 2007 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and the 2007 Royale Cup Women’s Amateur Championship respectively.
