HUMBER WINS GOLD AT RCGA UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Humber Institute of Technology Hawks and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds captured the respective men’s and women’s titles at the 2007 Canadian University College Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association which concluded Friday at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) continued to rule the women’s competition earning their fifth straight championship banner overtaking the University of Victoria Vikes during the final round. The Thunderbirds overcame a two-stroke deficit heading into today’s play to top the Vikes by nine-strokes finishing at 1237. The Vikes finished with a four-day team total of 1244.

The Thunderbirds have never seen the championship trophy travel off its Vancouver campus winning all five Canadian University College Championships contested to date. The University of Western Ontario was the closest to taking the title finishing six-strokes behind UBC in 2005.

Chris Macdonald, coach of British Columbia said “the competition was tough this year and the tournament has come a long way. The win was especially meaningful to our captain Erica Bennett who finished off her University golf career on a great note.”

Bennet is a Dieppe, N.B. native and was one of two veterans on the UBC squad. Kyla Inaba of Kelowna, B.C. was the other while rookies Melissa Core of Coquitlam, B.C., Kaitlin Troop of Brandon, Man. and Marianne Banton of Woodinville, Wash. USA, rounded out the team.

In the women’s individual competition, The University of Victoria’s Christina Spence of Cobble Hill, B.C. finished with a four day total of 74-72-76-76--298 to take top honours over University of Laval’s Gabrielle Dugré of La Sarre, Que.. Dugré finished in second five-strokes behind at 303.

On the men’s side Humber Institute of Technology captured their second title in five seasons upsetting three-time defending champions the University of Victoria Vikes. Humber cruised to victory with a team score of four-under par for the final round and team total of 1134. Victoria finished second at 1151 while UBC rounded out the top three at 1155.

Ray Chateau, coach of Humber, said “It feels great to have our team win against such an extremely talented field”.

Chateau will coach of the players representing Canada at the upcoming 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand, August 8-18. The team representing Canada at that competition will be selected by the CIAU in the coming weeks.

Humber’s victory was also a little sweeter for Lee French of London, Ont. as he claimed the men’s individual title in dramatic fashion defeating University of Laval’s Jean-Pierre Godin of Champlain, Que. Lee rallied to tie the third round leader by birding the eighteenth and forcing a playoff. Lee edged Godin in a sudden death playoff that lasted two holes.

Godin is also a member of the National Amateur Team and represented Canada at the Four Nations Cup last week in Australia. Victor Ciesielski, of Cambridge, Ont. also a member of the National Amateur Team finished tied for seventh at 284. Ciesielski was representing the University of Waterloo this week.

As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions French and Spence have earned an exemption into the 2007 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and the 2007 Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Championship respectively.

Last season, Todd Halpen of Calgary – then a member of the University of Victoria Vikes – followed a similar route all the way into the Canadian Open. Halpen competed at the 2006 Canadian University/College Championship and then earned runner up honours at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship giving him the right to play at the 2006 Canadian Open.

The following are final scores for the 2007 Canadian University/College Championships conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association on Friday, June 1, 2007. (Best four individual scores of five scores count towards team total).
