OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ROUND RESULTS

Matt Hunter of the Niagara Knights shot a 4-over 75 at the Kawartha Golf and Country Club in Peterborough, Ont., to hold on to win the 2007 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men’s provincial championship on Wednesday afternoon. Maggie Trainor of the Humber Hawks had an impressive two-day tournament as she took home the women’s title.

Hunter began the day four shots ahead of the pack after an opening-round 4-under 67 and managed to maintain the lead throughout the day despite shooting five bogeys to only one birdie in the final round that featured plenty of high winds and rain. Hunter became only the second Knight to win the men’s title since Robert Pelletier in 2004.

Matt Sloan of the Humber Hawks posted the low score on the day shooting a 3-under 68. Sloan and teammate Mike Zizek finished in a tie for second place with a total score of 144, two strokes behind Hunter. Scott Huston of the St. Clair Saints finished with the next best score with a two-day total of 146.

On the women’s side, Humber College swept the podium as Maggie Trainor (153), Jaime Steedman (154), and Shauna Wilde (157) finished first, second and third respectively. Trainor becomes the third Hawk in four years to take home the individual women’s title.

Ashley Gravett of the Georgian Grizzlies finished in fourth place shooting a total of 161. Gravett was also recognized by the tournament organizing committee for her fair play throughout the championship.

The Humber Hawks men’s team captured their 12th Provincial Team Championship, making up a three shot deficit to the Niagara Knights from the previous round. After the scorecards were handed in, Humber out-shot the competition by 16 strokes. Rounding out the leaderboard were the Niagara Knights capturing the silver medal with a team total of 604 while the St. Clair Saints took home their first medal in the men’s team competition as they finished in third with a score of 613.

Humber women’s team completed the sweep as they dominated the competition from start to finish shooting a two-day total of 307. The win for the Hawks marks the first time in OCAA Golf history that a college golf program has won both team titles in back-to-back years. Georgian College (346) finished in second place while Fanshawe College (400) won the bronze.

The host Fleming Knights did not come up empty handed as they won the Division II title with a final score of 647. The Knights managed to hold off the Confederation Thunderhawks who posted a final score of 683 while the Boreal Viperes won bronze with a team total of 702.

Golfers will now head to British Columbia to take part in the 2007 Ping Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf Open Championship hosted by Selkirk College from October 9-12. Golfers will tee off at the Castlegar Golf Club in Castlegar, BC.
