HUMBER LEADS AFTER DAY 1 AT CCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Despite dealing with rain for the first day of the 2007 PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Golf Open Championships hosted by Selkirk College, the Humber College Hawks holds a nine-stroke lead.

The Ontario-based school, which shot a 293 total team score, is led by James Castle’s 3-under 69. In second is the University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades with a 302. Mitchell Lock leads the way for the Cascades after shooting a 74.

Lock’s teammate, Mike Broadfoot finished with his teams third best total after shooting 76. Broadfoot didn’t like his start, but felt he battled back for a respectable finish. “Today it was the greens,” Broadfoot said of his challenge. “I Left a few putts out there. The rain didn’t affect me and I drove the ball well until reaching the 18th hole.” Slopes presented another challenge to Broadfoot and he feels fast greens will make things difficult for some golfers.

Ryan Morissette of the Durham Lords likes the course, but feels its fairways are tight. “You can get in trouble if you don’t hit straight off the tee. I didn’t play very well at all,” said Morissette with a smile, after shooting an 82. “I struggled off the tee.”

His teammate Scott Ray shot a 76 as the Lords currently sit in 9th out of 14 teams with a score of 319 tying them with the Kwantlen Eagles. The Camosun College Chargers round out the top three with a score of 303 putting them 10 shots behind Humber. Host Selkirk College Saints are in 10th spot after shooting 323.

Leading the way for the Saints is Nick Uhryonowich who shot a 74 giving him the fifth best total overall tied with three others. He’s followed by Lee McGraths’ 79, Cody Bartlett 83 and Jamie Matheson 87.

The Humber Hawks women’s team leads the Holland College Hurricanes by 20 shots with 159. The Red Deer Queens shot a 207.

The forecast for the rest of the week calls for sun and cloud, which may give other teams an edge in catching Humber.
