The rain held off long enough to complete the opening round of the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships hosted by St. Lawrence College, Cornwall in Morrisburg yesterday.

There are some familiar faces atop the leader board in the men’s individual competition as the Humber College duo of Mike Zizek and James Castle turned in the low scores of the day with rounds of 70, good enough for a two stroke lead on Davey Evans (Niagara) who sits alone in third place.

On the women’s individual competition, the Humber sweep of 2007 is in serious jeopardy as the Niagara newcomer, Daniele Dunlop holds a solid two stroke lead over the Humber duo of Maggie Trainor and Bev Peel, who sit second and third after rounds of 76 and 78 respectively.

In men’s team competition, it appears to be shaping up to be a two horse race, as Humber holds a slight five stroke lead over the Niagara Knights. Durham sits third, 17 strokes back. The Humber women also find themselves leading the team component as they lead Niagara by 13 strokes and Fanshawe by 38.

The second round has began in Morrisburg, but officials will be keeping a close eye on the radar as the course has taken on signifigant rain in the past 24 hours, but feel confident today’s final round will be completed without delay.
