The 2009 OCAA Golf Championships kicked off with a windy and
chilly day at LochNess Links Golf Course in Welland, Ontario on
Monday. Luckily for all 87 golfers in the field, the rain would
hold off for the entire first round.
The Georgian Grizzlies Men's team got off to a good start, shooting
a combined round of 304 to take a first round lead. The Grizzlies
were led by Eric Adamo, who shot an opening round of 75 (+3),
followed by Keegan Tyers and Joey Burton, who each shot 76 (+4),
and James Skrypec with a 77 (+5).
The Humber Hawks are in second place - two back off the lead with a
team combined score of 306, while the host Niagara Knights shot a
combined 309 to end the opening round in third spot. Durham College
is in fourth place after shooting a combined score of 310.
In the Men's Individual category, Scott Fricker of Niagara College
and Mike Zizek of Humber College each shot an opening round 73 (+1)
for the days best score. Taylor Booth of Fanshawe and Patrick Sears
of George Brown each shot a 74 (+2). Sears' score of 33 (-3)on the
back nine was the tournament's best score for nine holes.
In Women's golf, the Humber Hawks team took a commanding 27 shot
lead after the first day. Bev Peel (86) and Danielle Green (76)
combined to shoot a first round score of 162. However, the days
best individual score by a female golfer went to Kayleigh Kraemer
of Durham College, who shot an impressive 75 (+3).
Day two of action at the 2009 OCAA Golf Championships starts at
8:00AM Tuesday morning.
