ASHBURN, Ont. - The Humber College Hawks and the University of
Victoria Vikings lead their respective male and female divisions
through the second round of the Canadian University/College
Championship conducted by Golf Canada at Royal Ashburn Golf Club in
Ashburn, Ont.
In the men's competition, the Humber College Hawks continued their
well-rounded play with a score of +20 (308) on the day for a
two-round tally of +25 (601) to sit 13 strokes ahead of the
University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The Hawks ended the
day with two players in the top-10 and four players in the top-20.
Humber's roster –which includes David Lang
of Toronto, Adrian Cord of Etobicoke, Ont.,
Alex Dumais of Caledon, Ont., and Mark
Hoffman and Gregory Belsito of Thornhill,
Ont. – is one of the more experienced teams in the field as
all the players are over the age of 20.
Andrew Robb of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds
holds the individual men's lead after carding a +2 (74) for a
two-day score of +2 (146). Robb, 23, commands a 1-stroke lead over
Mark Hoffman of Humber College. Robb, a Richmond, B.C. native,
played consistent despite the wind, making two birdies and four
bogeys.
"In a way, the wind was a good thing. It firmed up the fairways
and greens. For some of the players, including myself, the wind had
a significant impact on your ball in the air," said Robb,
referencing the 45km/h wind gusts throughout the day. "However,
this is not about me at all. I really believe this is a team
championship, not an individual championship, so I think we need to
go out tomorrow and make it our moving day."
On the women's side, the University of Victoria Vikings shot a +31
(319) for a two-day total of +67 (643). The Vikings, winners of the
Canadian University/College Championship in 2008, trailed by 10
strokes after the opening round, but made up the deficit to lead
their provincial rivals, the University of British Columbia
Thunderbirds, by two strokes. The Vikings squad is lead by Anne
Balser of Digby, N.S. who fired a +3 (75) and stands at a
two-round total of +10 (154).
Balser, the University of Victoria's reigning Female Athlete of
the Year, also holds the individual women's lead by two strokes
over Edmonton's Kylie Barros of the University of British Columbia.
Barros, 19, carded a +7 (79) and is +12 (156) for the
tournament.
"Today's round went pretty good. I was hitting the ball really
well, but I just couldn't make any putts," said Balser, who had
three bogeys and no birdies on the day. "I'm just making really
solid contact with the ball right now. As long as I hit the green
and two-putt, that's all you can ask for. Tomorrow, I hope to score
well to help my team."
Balser's teammates include Alyssa Herkel of Port Alberni, B.C.,
Kailey Dirksen of Mission, B.C., as well as Victoria Kondrak and
Megan Woodland of Victoria.
Chip Shots
Shot of the day honours are shared by Connor O'Reilly of Edmonton
and Kailey Dirksen. O'Reilly made a hole-in-one on Royal Ashburn's
16th hole, a 200-yard par 3. Dirksen dropped her hole-in-one on the
par 3 4th hole. The 136-yard ace was a career-first.
"I lost sight of the ball at the beginning because I thought it
was going to be short," said Dirksen. "It landed, rolled 10 feet
and then my partners cheered as it rolled in."
The low round of the day on the men's side belonged to Brennan
Rumancik of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and Kolby Kniel of the
Mount Royal Cougars as both players shot a +1 (73). In the women's
division, the low round went to Anne Balser with a score of +3
(75).
The third round of the Canadian University/College Championship
tees off Thursday at 7:30 am EST.
All rounds of the championship are open to the public and
admission is free.
