ASHBURN, Ont. – The Humber College Hawks lead the men's
division, while the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and
the University of Victoria Vikings are tied atop the women's
division through the third round of the Canadian University/College
Championship conducted by Golf Canada at Royal Ashburn Golf Club in
Ashburn, Ont.
The Thunderbirds finished the third round with a score of +31
(319) and the Vikings came in at +33 (321) for an equal three-day
total of +100 (364).
The Thunderbirds, whose roster includes Kylie Barros, 19, of
Edmonton, Hayley Cameron, 20, of Kelowna B.C., Vanessa Leon, 22, of
Brampton, Ont., Lindsay Manion, 22, of Surrey, B.C., and Janelle
Samoluk, 22, of Vancouver, held a two-stroke lead after the second
round but saw that lead slip away during a breezy third round.
"It wasn't the warmest day and it really cooled off for us on the
back 9, but thankfully there was less wind compared to yesterday,"
said Barros, who sits +16 (232) to lead the individual women's
division by one stroke over UVic's Anne Balser. "Over the years,
you get to know the girls out here. We compete against UVic all
year. I think that's why I'm more focused on the team aspect of the
tournament. This year the individual title comes second. We have a
good battle for the team championship, so that's what we're
focusing on for tomorrow."
The Vikings squad, which includes 2010 women's individual
champion, Anne Balser of Digby N.S., Alyssa Herkel of Port Alberni,
B.C. and Kailey Dirksen of Mission, B.C., as well as Victoria
Kondrak and Megan Woodland of Victoria, hopes to dethrone UBC, the
two-time defending women's champion.
In the men's competition, the Humber College Hawks continued their
stellar play, carding a third round score of +3 (291) to sit at +27
(891) for the tournament. The Hawks, winners of the
University/College Championship in 2004 and 2007, have a 15-stroke
lead over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds going
into Friday's final round thanks to impressive performances from
all five team members. Teammates Dave Lang of
Toronto, Mark Hoffman of Thornhill, Ont. and
Adrian Cord of Etobicoke, Ont. are all in the top
five, while Alex Dumais of Caledon, Ont. and
Gregory Belsito of Thornhill, Ont., rank in the
top 12.
A fourth-year Humber College player, Hoffman also holds the men's
individual lead through 3 rounds of play. The 22-year-old trailed
by one stroke after the second round, but made 3 birdies on the day
en route to a -1 (71) for a three-day tally of +2 (218). He
currently holds a one-stroke lead over Andrew Robb of the
University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Hoffman credited his
individual performance to the Hawks renewed sense of team spirit to
start the year.
"The team we have here is different than in previous years.
At Humber, we started training really hard in the gym and we feel
really close and comfortable with each other,” said Hoffman
about his team's preparation. "We compete against one another and
in a friendly way we want to beat each other. It's reassuring to
know that someone else out there is playing good golf and always
has your back.”

Following Thursday's round, a cut was made to the low 10 male
