HUMBER DOMINATES LEADERBOARD AT OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

CORNWALL, Ont. - The Humber Hawks entered the 2011 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships as five-time defending men's team champions. After Round 1, it appears that they are in no hurry to relinquish the crown.

Three Humber golfers sit 1-2-3 following a damp 18 holes at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club, including overall leader Adrian Cord who shot a four-under 68. The defending OCAA silver medalist posted a near bogey-free round, his only blemish coming on the Par 5 eleventh hole. Cord had five birdies in total, including three straight on holes two, three and four.

Cord leads teammate Alex Dumais by two strokes. Dumais mixed in three birdies with his lone bogey on the Par 4 fourteenth hole. Fellow Humber golfer Conor Hache had a mixed day on the course, finishing one-under 71. Hache had five bogeys during the round, but made up for this with six birdies.

David Lang of Durham was the top non-Hawk with an even-par 72. His best hole of the round came on the second hole, where he earned an eagle.

Other golfers of note include Adam Kroon of St. Lawrence-Cornwall, who used home turf to his advantage, sitting in a four-way tie for fifth place with a two-over 74. Included in that tie is Fanshawe's Taylor Booth, a 2009 OCAA silver medalist. Defending OCAA champion Mark Hoffman of Humber completed Round 1 in a six-way tie for ninth with a three-over 75.

In the race for the OCAA men's team title, Humber leads Durham by 18 stokes. Georgian is one shot behind Durham in third place.

On the women's leaderboard, defending OCAA champion Kayleigh Kraemer holds a two-stroke lead over Nicole Belcourt of Georgian. Kraemer ran into trouble on the Par 5 ninth hole, where she triple-bogeyed. She got one back with a birdie on the Par 4 seventeenth, and finished her round with an eight-over 80.

Defending OCAA silver medalist Tiffany Albath sits in third place, four shots behind her Durham teammate. Defending OCAA bronze medalist Jasmine Paton of Georgian is six shots off the pace. In the race for the women's team title, Durham leads Georgian by five strokes.

Round 2 of the 54-hole tournament takes place Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. Round 3 will take place on Wednesday.
