CANADIANS OFF TO QUICK START AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Opening-round action at the 14th World University Golf Championship got underway Tuesday at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, Czech Republic, with players from 17 nations, including a contingent of 11 Canadians, battling inclement weather throughout a day that included two suspensions of play – at 12:55 p.m. CEST (6:55 a.m. EST) and 4:15 p.m. CEST (10:15 a.m. EST) before round one was suspended due to darkness.

While only a small segment of female competitors completed their first rounds as scheduled – due to afternoon tee-times – before play was halted at 8:42 p.m. CEST (2:42 p.m. EST) all male competitors posted 18-hole scores.

Charles Côté (Thetford Mines, Que. / Université Laval) is the top Canadian in the men's division after carding an opening-round 3-under 69. Côté is T6, five shots back of leader Jacobo Pastor Lopez of Spain, who opened with a score of 8-under 64.

Chris Hemmerich (Kitchener, Ont. / University of Guelph) is currently in T38 spot at 1-over 73, while Chris Bevan (Toronto, Ont. / Humber College) and Simon McInnis (Toronto, Ont. / University of Waterloo) are T43 at 2-over 74.

Gajan Sivabalasingham (Ballantrae, Ont. / University of Waterloo), meanwhile, carded an opening-round 3-over 75 to sit T53, while Ben Bell (Ottawa, Ont. / Humber College) rounded out the Canadian scoring at 7-over 79 and is currently tied for 74th.

All five members of Team Canada's Women's Squad completed their respective rounds on Tuesday, with Megan Woodland (Victoria, B.C. / University of Victoria) leading the way at 1-over 73. Devon Rizzo (Brantford, Ont. / University of Waterloo) carded a score of 2-over 74, while Alyssa Herkel (Port Alberni, B.C. / University of Victoria) and Kylie Barros (Edmonton, Alta. / University of British Columbia) shot 4-over 76 and 5-over 77 respectively. Brynn Tomie (Bedford, N.S. / University of Victoria) opened with a round of 23-over 95. 

Play will resume Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. CEST (1 a.m. EST), with tee-times for the second round of play remaining unchanged.
