ALBATH, KALKANIS LEAD OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER ROUND 2

ALBATH, KALKANIS LEAD OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER ROUND 2

WINDSOR, Ont. - Durham's Tiffany Albath is 18 holes away from winning consecutive provincial women's golf titles.

Albath shot an 80 on Tuesday to move two strokes ahead of St. Clair's Heather MacKenzie at the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships at the Roseland Golf & Curling Club in Windsor, Ont. The tournament is being hosted by St. Clair.

Albath is attempting to become just the third OCAA women's golfer to successfully defend her individual title, and the first since Georgian's Katie Ferguson in 2002. Albath is also eying her third individual medal, winning silver in 2010.

MacKenzie shot an 81 in her second day of competition. St. Clair teammate Ashley Unrau currently sits in bronze medal position, shooting an 86. Albath, MacKenzie and Unrau all improved on their first round scores by one stroke.

The St. Clair women are primed to dethrone Durham as women's team champions, taking a 14-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round. MacKenzie and Unrau have combined for 334 strokes, compared to Albath and Stephanie Mole's 348.

On the men's side, Georgian's Colton Kalkanis holds a one-stroke lead over Seneca's Mitchel Kennedy after both golfers shot a 71 on Tuesday. A trio of golfers are two strokes behind the lead, including Christian McCullough and Alex Dumais of Humber and James Skrypec of Georgian, setting up what should be a dramatic finish on Wednesday. McCullough was the only golfer to shoot an even-round 70 in Round 2.

Four other golfers are within five strokes of Kalkanis. Humber's Ben McFaul is four strokes off the pace, while Shea Varty of Durham, Cam Head of Fleming and Brennan Smith of St. Lawrence-Kingston are five shots back.

The most improved golfer from Round 1 was Nathan Clouthier of St. Lawrence-Brockville, who rebounded from a 97 on Monday to shoot 76. Tim Lemovre of St. Lawrence-Kingston scored the only eagle of the tournament on the Par 5 second hole.

Humber widened its lead in the men's team competition with a score of 577 through two days of competition. Georgian sits three strokes back, while Durham is in bronze medal position, 15 shots off the pace.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The male and female player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.

Golfers are representing 15 Ontario college campuses, including Boréal, Centennial, Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Fleming, Georgian, Humber, Mohawk, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence (Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston), and Seneca.
