FIELD SET FOR 2012 PING CCAA GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

FIELD SET FOR 2012 PING CCAA GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College is set to welcome the top Canadian collegiate golfers to Oshawa next week as they will host the 2012 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championship. The three-round championship will take place from October 16-19 at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club which is located in the heart of Oshawa.

"The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club will be an excellent venue to host this years' national championship," said Ken Babcock, Durham College athletic director. "The media, sponsors and friends of the program had a chance to try out the course yesterday at the kick-off event and it is second to none. I am certain that it will provide a challenge for all of the participants involved next week."

The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 16 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the official practice round presented by Impact Canopies. The CCAA Championship Banquet presented by OEM will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jostens is the official supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.

The first round of the championship will tee-off on Wednesday, October 17 at 8 a.m. with over 100 golfers from 24 Colleges and Universities taking part in the event.

Durham College heads into the tournament as the two-time defending CCAA women's golf national champions. They will be led by Tiffany Albath, who won her second straight OCAA golf championship in Windsor last week. The Lords men's team features captain David Lang who finished fourth at last years' national championship. Freshman Shea Varty had a great showing at provincials this year with a fourth place finish in the individual competition.

Durham has hosted this event twice in 2001 and 2002. Durham College also hosted the RCGA University/College golf championship in 2011.

The Lords have hosted award winning and highly regarded national championships including men's volleyball (1990 & 2003), women's volleyball (1990), men's soccer (1999), women's soccer (1999), men's & women's golf (2001 & 2002), baseball (2009) and men's basketball (2011).

The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club was built in 1895. However, the original charter for the club was granted, at its present site, on Nov. 21, 1906. Since 1911, when the first bunkers were built, the course has continued to be groomed, modified and refined to sustain its challenge. Many of these modifications were designed by Canada's foremost golf course architect, Stanley Thompson, which qualifies the Club as a "Stanley Thompson Course". This century old layout with its thousands of mature trees, well-manicured fairways and greens, is The Hidden Gem of Durham Region.
