ST. CLAIR GOLF TEAMS OFF TO COMPETE AT OCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

WELLAND, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's and women's golf teams are off to the Welland, Ont., area this weekend to compete in the OCAA Golf Championships. The championships are being hosted by Niagara College at Hunter's Pointe Golf Club. The teams will play a practice round on Sunday followed by three rounds of competition from Monday to Wednesday.

The St. Clair women, who are the defending OCAA gold medalists, will have their work cut out for them to medal this year as Humber, Georgian and Niagara have fielded strong women's teams in the first two invitationals. The Saints women's team consists of Laura Martin (third year - Chatham, Ont.), Jordan Schatz (fourth year - LaSalle, Ont.) and Victoria Ducharme (second year - Windsor, Ont.).

The St. Clair women are currently ranked first in Ontario and third in Canada. The women placed third as a team at the Fanshawe Invitational last Saturday with Ducharme shooting an 81 in very tough conditions to place fourth individually. In the past three years the St. Clair women have won two provincial gold, and one provincial silver.

The St. Clair men will be looking to improve on their 10th place finish last year. The Saints are led by fifth-year player Alex Zappio (Tecumseh, Ont.) who recently won the Western Ontario Amateur Tournament. Other teams members are Tyler Leblanc (third year - Belle River, Ont.), Brodie Weaver (first year - Chatham, Ont.), Jay Chambers (first year - St. Thomas, Ont.) and Zack Gervais (first year - St. Clair Shores, Ont.). The Saints finished in fourth place at the Niagara Invitational this past Monday on the same course as the championship.
