WELLAND, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's and women's golf teams got off to a good start on Day 1 at the OCAA Golf Championships on Monday at Hunter's Pointe Golf Club on a wet and dreary day outside of Welland, Ont. Rounds two and three are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The St. Clair men were led by fifth-year player Alex Zappio who carded a one-over round of 71. Zappio sits in fifth place in the individual standings but is only two strokes out of first place. For the team competition five players play each day counting the best four scores. Should the Saints finish in the top four they will qualify for the CCAA National Golf Championships in Chilliwack, B.C. from Oct 12-16.

The St. Clair women were led by second-year player Victoria Ducharme who shot a solid eight-over 78 to sit in a tie for fourth place in the individual competition. However, Ducharme is only three strokes out of the lead. The St. Clair women are in third place as a team with a total of 158. For the women's team event three players play with the top two counting.

The Saints are only three strokes behind the leading Humber Hawks. Laura Martin also had a solid round shooting a 10-over 80. Jordan Schatz shot an 86 to round out the women's scoring. The women must finish in the top two places in order to qualify for the CCAA championships.
