ANOTHER WET ONE FOR COLLEGE GOLFERS

WELLAND, Ont. - On Sept. 17, Fanshawe's invitational golf tournament in London was washed out after only five holes.

On Monday, a similar fate awaited the players at the Niagara Knights Classic at Hunters Pointe Golf Course in Welland, Ont. There was plenty of rain and this time they got through 12 holes before pulling the plug.

Actually Mohawk's team was able to play at least 15, but with a shotgun start where players begin on both the first and 10th tees, the field could not play the same number of holes before darkness set in. So organizers decided to count the first six holes on each nine, as everyone had completed those holes. Par for the event turned out to be 48.

Mountaineer players carded the following scores:

Brendan Canning 50
Nic Francis
52
Alex Proksch
53
Colin Churchill
56
Cameron Kotulak
69

Mohawk had two individuals compete in the event.

Wade Timson shot 67, and Jennafer Macdonell had a 99, as the women were able to complete all 18 holes.

"It was a long and very wet day, requiring much patience and perseverance," said Mohawk head coach Deb Eldridge. "I am proud of how the team did in both their attitude and results. They are a great group."

Georgian College in Barrie will play host to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championship Oct. 3-5 at National Pines Golf Course.
