WALLWIN AND GEORGIAN WOMEN GOLDEN, LEMAY CLAIMS BRONZE AT GOLF NATIONALS

STRATFORD, P.E.I. - The Georgian Grizzlies women's golf team took centre stage on the final day of the 2016 PING CCAA Golf National Championships in Prince Edward Island on Friday.

The team of Addison Wallwin, Emilie Tyndall and Sady Beelik won gold shooting a combined scored total of 456 to finish 14 strokes ahead of the second place Humber College team. It's the second straight year the Grizzlies women's team has medaled at the event after winning bronze last year.

This is also Georgian's third all-time gold medal in the team competition at the event having won the title previously in 2000 and 2002. The Grizzlies women have now won an impressive total of eight medals (three gold, two silver, three bronze) in the team event at the National Championships since competition began at the turn of the century.

Wallwin, who was named a CCAA All-Canadian prior to the start of the event, continued her consistent play throughout the tournament. The Barrie, Ont., native won gold in the individual competition finishing the three rounds with a three stroke advantage over her next closest competitor.

She becomes the second Georgian College student-athlete to win gold at the event as Katie Ferguson won gold in 2000 and 2002.

Tyndall had a strong competition and finished in fifth place just three strokes away from a podium finish.

Beelik finished the tournament in a tie for 11th place making for an impressive feat for Georgian with all three women's golfers finishing in the top 15.

On the men's side, Matt Lemay had a strong third round matching his day one total of 71 to finish one-over for the tournament and win the bronze medal. Originally it was thought that Lemay had finished in fourth place but an incorrect scorecard resulted in a disqualification moving the Grizzlies golfer into third.

Lemay, a native of Waterloo, Ont., has now won the bronze medal at the tournament two years in a row.

Mitch Ahrens (T-21st), Jon Collins (T-63rd), Josh Lynch (69th) and Danny Watts (T-70th) rounded out the Georgian men's field. Overall the men's team finished in 11th place.
