BRING ON THE OCAA WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

This past week saw the Women’s Indoor Soccer Regional Tournaments take place as Conestoga College hosted three regions of the competition at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan while St. Lawrence College in Kingston hosted the East Region Tournament. St. Lawrence (Kingston), Sheridan, Durham and Conestoga were successful at the event, winning their respective regions and securing their spot at the OCAA Championship to be held on March 22-23. Regional winners will be joined by the regional runner-ups which include Humber, Seneca, Niagara and Fleming (Peterborough).

The Sheridan Bruins kicked off Regional action on Monday as they went 4-0 to pick up the Central West Region title. Finishing in second were the Humber Hawks from Etobicoke. After an opening match loss to the Bruins, Humber picked up back-to-back shutout victories over Mohawk and Georgian and then wrapped up the day with a 2-2 tie against the Confederation Thunderhawks. Last year’s Region winner Mohawk finished in third place with a 2-2 record, missing out of the OCAA Championship by one point.

A new champion will be crowned at the OCAA Women’s Indoor Soccer Championship as the Centennial Colts were knocked out of tournament play in the Central East Region. The Durham Lords maintained their outdoor season momentum and advanced to the OCAA Provincial Indoor Championship tournament with a perfect 3-0 record at the Regional Qualifying Championship. Durham shut out their opponents in all three games. The team from Oshawa will head into the tournament as the favourite and will aim to capture bookend gold medals for their 2006-07 Women’s Soccer seasons. Seneca picked up the second spot in the Central East to advance to the Championship.

In the evenly matched West Region, host team Conestoga College advanced to the Championship with a record of 1-0-2. Conestoga was the only team in the region to pick up a win, as the other five games ended in a tie. Niagara College also advanced, but it required some dramatics, as the team from Welland required a penalty kick shootout to defeat Ancaster’s Redeemer Royals.

The St. Lawrence Vikings swept the East Region for the second consecutive year with a 3-0 round robin record, outscoring their opponents 7-1. The Vikings were also honoured for the respect and attitude they demonstrated throughout the weekend and were awarded with the Fair Play Award. Also qualifying for the Championship from the East Region were the Fleming Knights from Peterborough. In Fleming’s round robin finale, the Knights defeated the St. Lawrence Sharks by a score of 2-0 to clinch second place in the region and claim a spot in the Championship.
