DURHAM WINS DOUBLE GOLD IN WOMEN’S SOCCER

Amanda Druno recorded a hat trick as the Durham Lords beat Humber 4-0 in the gold medal final to win its second provincial title.

After an opening goal off the foot of Abbie Visser, Druno took control of the pitch as she tallied a natural hat trick to propel the Lords to the 4-0 win.

On the road to the championship final, Durham finished first in their pool on day one, sporting a 3-0 record. On day two, Durham found themselves against the previously undefeated Niagara Knights. Behind two goals from Kristin Bodashefsky, Durham advance to the Championship final with a 4-1 victory over the Knights.

With the indoor title, the Lords achieved bookend gold medals for their 2006-07 Women’s Soccer seasons, winning the outdoor title in the fall. Durham becomes the first college to accomplish this feat since Humber in 2001.

The silver medal for the Hawks marked their second consecutive medal in Women’s Indoor Soccer, as they won bronze in 2006.

Joining Durham and Humber on the medal podium were the Seneca Sting. Seneca and Niagara proved to be equally matched as the two teams played to a 0-0 deadlock after regulation time and after a 15 minute sudden-death overtime period. In dramatic fashion, penalty kicks were used to decide the winner of the match. Six shooters were needed to decided the eventual bronze medal winner, as Seneca outlasted the Knights 3-2 to take home the hardware.
