VAUGHAN, Ont. - It was a big day for the Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's indoor soccer teams as they competed in their OCAA regional qualifiers at the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont., on Monday.

Both teams qualified for the OCAA championship with great play, posting matching 2-1 records on the day which was good enough for second place finishes on each side.

The men were led by second-year forward Gavin deGroot (Barrie) who had four goals in three games including a hat-trick in the Grizzlies final game against St. Lawrence-Cornwall which paved their way to provincials with a 5-2 victory.

Georgian also had goals on the day from Anthony Coquim (Bradford) and Victor Frohmann (Midhurst) as they defeated the Fleming Knights 2-0. Their only blemish came to the defending champions from Sheridan who defeated the Grizzlies 4-0.

The women's team had a great performance, opening with a 1-0 victory over the Fleming Knights. Morgan Walkem (Egbert) scored what would turn out to be the game winner with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

Georgian followed that up with a great effort against the St. Lawrence-Cornwall Sharks. After numerous close chances the Grizzlies broke through when third year veteran Jacklyn Webster (Barrie) scored with seven minutes left to play. Suzanne Crawley (Alliston) added another goal late on a hard shot to seal the 2-0 victory.

Having already clinched a top-two position the Grizzlies faced last year's defending champions the Humber Hawks who also had a perfect record on the day. Georgian frustrated the Hawks but Humber were able to score three second half goals to win 3-0.

The impressive performances led to a milestone for the Grizzlies as it marks the first time that both the men's and women's teams have qualified for the provincials in the same year.

Both teams will next compete in the OCAA championship on Mar. 21-22 hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont.
