ANCASTER, Ont. - Two soccer powerhouses collided on Saturday afternoon at the OCAA Women's Indoor Soccer Championship hosted by Redeemer University College. As expected, fans were not disappointed as the Humber Hawks and Seneca Sting put on a show in the provincial championship gold medal match. The game was a rematch of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 provincial championships.
It took overtime and penalty kicks to decide, and when the dust had settled, Seneca College hoisted the trophy as the 2013-14 OCAA women's indoor soccer provincial champions.
Both teams advanced to the championship final after winning their semi-final matches on Saturday morning. Seneca defeated the Fanshawe Falcons while the Hawks knocked off the Conestoga Condors.
An early goal by the Sting in the first half of the gold medal match gave them the edge and almost proved to be enough but the resilient Hawks netted an equalizer late in the second half to force the match into extra time.
With teams trading chances in the extra 15 minutes, both teams
defences stole the show as neither team was able to claim the title
in overtime.
Penalty kicks decided the championship as the Sting prevailed and
dethroned the Hawks who were the reigning OCAA women's indoor
soccer champions. Seneca was finally able to break through in 2014
after the two previous championships (2012 and 2013) ended with the
Hawks claiming gold and the Sting settling for silver.
For their strong play over the two days, Humber's Alora
Walcott and Seneca's Nicole Zikovitz were
named tournament all-stars while Humber's Katarina
Conde took home the top goalie award. Seneca's
Hilda Chmait was named the championship MVP.
