GEORGE BROWN, HUMBER WIN OCAA INDOOR SOCCER TITLES

ANCASTER, Ont. - In a thrilling final day of play at the 2017 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships presented by belairdirect, the Humber Hawks women's team and George Brown Huskies men's team outlasted all the rest to claim provincial gold.

It took 48 games to crown a women's and men's champion but well worth the wait and the effort it took the Hawks and Huskies to be the last teams standing.

The day began with two women's and two men's semi-finals that all ended 1-0.

On the women's side, the Humber Hawks advanced to the final with a 1-0 win over the Fanshawe Falcons while the St. Clair Saints knocked off the Seneca Sting 1-0 in overtime.

The men's semis saw the George Brown Huskies outlast the Fanshawe Falcons 1-0 and the St. Clair Saints defeat the Humber Hawks 1-0.

In the women's gold medal match, one goal was again all that was needed as the Hawks scored late in the second half to defeat the St. Clair Saints 1-0. Humber's Shaniece Bennett netted the winner for the Hawks.

Fanshawe was awarded the bronze after defeating the Seneca Sting 3-1.

For her strong play, Humber's goalkeeper Vanessa Fiore was named the Championship MVP. Fiore did not let in a single goal the entire championship.

Shaniece Bennett and Rebecca Spratt were also named all-stars from Humber.

From the silver medalist Saints, Alexandria Samping and Nina Civitarese received all-star awards while Fanshawe's Daniella Strano rounded out the all-star team.

In the men's gold medal match, another late goal was the difference. George Brown's Daniel Cunha knocked home the winner to give the Huskies the title over the St. Clair Saints 1-0.

Humber took home the bronze with a 2-1 victory over the Falcons.

George Brown's Shaquille Agard was named Championship MVP scoring a number of the Huskie's goals over the three days.

Savas Efstathiadis and Robert Mijackovic were also named all-stars from George Brown.

From the silver medalist Saints, goalkeeper Shane Beaton and Martin Nyul received all-star awards and Humber's Jaineil Hoilett rounded out the award winners.
