ST. CLAIR WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER WIN PROVINCIAL SILVER

ANCASTER, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's indoor soccer team wrapped up their season on Saturday winning the OCAA silver medal. The championship was hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont.

After going 3-0-1 in round robin play on Thursday and Friday the Saints finished first in their pool of five to qualify for the semi-final on Saturday morning against the Seneca Sting. In a great back and forth match neither team could score in regulation. The Saints had a couple of great chances but couldn't find the back of the net including hitting a post. In an intense overtime, St. Clair got the winning golden goal at the seven-minute mark as Cassie Nicholas put one through the keeper's legs to secure a spot in the gold medal game. Alexandria Samping (Windsor/Holy Names) earned the clean sheet and win.

The championship game was a rematch against the Humber Hawks from the day before. On Friday, the Saints tied Humber 0-0 in round robin play. In another great match neither team could score in the first half after a couple of great saves by both keepers. Humber got the game's only goal midway through the second half on a nice individual effort. St. Clair pressured Humber late but could not get the tying goal.

St. Clair's Samping was named a Championship All-Star. Samping played every minute in goal for the Saints and allowed only one goal against in six games. Nina Civitarese (LaSalle/Villanova) was also named a Championship All-Star. Civitarese was solid in the midfield providing great play and leadership throughout the entire event.

Since coming back into indoor soccer in 2014 the St. Clair women have done very well. They have qualified for the provincial championship all four years and have won a gold (2015) along with their silver this year.
