ST. CLAIR WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER OFF TO SLOW START AT CHAMPIONSHIP

ANCASTER, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's varsity indoor soccer team is off to a tough start at the OCAA championship in round robin play after facing a couple of very tough teams on Day 1. The event is being hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont.

In their first match of the day, the Saints took on the Seneca Sting from Toronto. In a very tight competitive match, St. Clair lost by a score of 2-1. After going up 1-0 on a goal by Alexandria Schooley (Tecumseh), the Sting tied the game up at 1-1 late in the first half. Seneca scored the winner midway through the second half and the Saints could not score the equalizer late in the match after putting on plenty of pressure late. To make matters worse for St. Clair, it lost top defender Charesse Thomas-Tate (Brampton) in the match due to an injury for the rest of the tournament.

The Saints bounced back against a tough Humber Hawks squad in their second game of the day earning a hard fought 1-1 draw in another exciting game. The Hawks are the defending gold medalists from last year after defeating St. Clair in the gold medal game one year ago. The Saints went up early in the first half on a nice goal by Melanie Jubenville (Windsor). However, St. Clair could not make that goal hold up as Humber scored with four minutes left in the game to earn the tie.

After Day 1 of round robin play the Saints are in fourth place. St. Clair will play two more round robin games on Friday afternoon and will most likely need two wins and some help to make the semi-finals on Saturday. The Saints will take on George Brown College at 2:50 p.m. followed by Durham College at 4:30 p.m. The Top 2 teams in their pool of five will advance.
