OCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL CROSSOVER RECAP AND CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Feb 26, 2007

The scores have been settled and the draw is set. The countdown to March Madness… Ontario Style had officially begun.

In Men’s Championship Crossover action between Loyalist and St. Clair it was St. Clair’s Alex Stulic leading all scorers with 15 points. He was closely followed by his teammate Tyler Pelley who also contributed 13 of his own in the 78-51 romp over the Lancers. Leading the Loyalist offense was Andrew DaCosta who scored 14 points, eight of which came in the second half.

The East vs. Central men’s match up came down to the wire between Cambrian and Centennial College with the Golden Shield posting the 79-73 upset. Mike Raskevicins turned in a dominating performance for the Shield, pouring in a game high 36 points. The duo of Ben Mills and Shevon Thompson led the Colts scoring with 23 and 22 points respectively.

It was a battle of balanced scoring in the game between Mohawk and St. Lawrence Kingston. The Vikings kept an even keel throughout the game however, with three players, Milton Holness (15), LeTroy Edwards (12) and Andrew Robertson (17), all reaching double digits in scoring. Igor Trbojevic (Mohawk) topped his teams scoring with 17 points.

The final crossover match between Seneca and Niagara also saw a balanced offensive game. Seneca bolted out to a seven point half-time lead courtesy of Ryan Carrafiello who netted 10 first-half points and Shermarke Pryce and Collin Morrison who banked seven points each before recess. When the second-half resumed the tables turned and Niagara pulled away outscoring Seneca 45-25 to capture the final crossover match 75-62 and earn the final championship tournament birth. Niagara’s scoring was led by first year player Brendan Cato (15), fourth year veteran Anderson St. Valle (13) and sophomore Ian Harriette (13).

The brackets are set for the Men’s Basketball Championship and once again Humber College will assume their position as the number one seed, but looking to knock them off will be the second ranked and undefeated Fanshawe Falcons.

In the opening round, the defending Champion Hawks will face eighth ranked Niagara College, who comes into the match after eliminating Seneca 75-62 in their crossover game.

The only team with a perfect record on the line, Fanshawe (14-0), will have the Cinderella story Cambrian Golden Shield in their first round meeting. The Shield upset Centennial College 79-73 in their crossover game, eliminating one of only two teams to defeat the defending champions Humber Hawks this season.

Algonquin College will square off against Sheridan in the three/six tilt in what promised to be an evenly matched affair. The two teams did not meet in the regular season.

Also involved in an evenly matched showdown will be the four/five game between St. Clair and St. Lawrence Kingston. The teams have not faced off this year but the match up between St. Clair’s leading scorer Leng Yeang (16.67) and St. Lawrence Kingston’s Milton Holness (22.62) promises to be intriguing.
