SHERIDAN MEETS HUMBER FOR OCAA MEN'S HOOPS TITLE

Semifinal Game #1: Sheridan defeats Algonquin 94-92, 2OT

The first OCAA Men’s Basketball finalist is set.

It took the Sheridan Bruins two extra periods, but they pulled off the upset in the first semi-final, defeating Algonquin 94-92 in Double Overtime to advance to Saturday’s Gold Medal game.

Sheridan’s outside shooting was cold for most of the first half, but the Bruins scored a pair of 3-pointers in a 10-2 run to close out the half up 36-34. The second half ended tied at 77, and the first overtime period solved nothing. In the second overtime period, Cory Cooper of Sheridan nailed a 3 with 13 seconds left to go up 94-92. Algonquin had an opportunity to tie, but wasn’t able to get a shot away.

Jelani Matthew led the Bruins with 21 points, including 9 from the line. Khalid Abdel-Gabar scored 18 for Sheridan in the win, and Cooper added 15.

Njuguna Waiganjo scored a game-high 28 points for the Thunder. Abdul Kosar scored 22, going 5/11 from outside the arc. Seaton George added 13.

Following the hard fought game, a brief altercation took place between some of the players as they were preparing to shake hands. The incident was disolved quickly by team coaches and host committee personel. After reviewing video of the incident the OCAA has levied suspensions to the following players; Sheridan's Greg Osawe- 1 game, Sheridan's Anthony Loungs- 2 games, Algonquin's Njuguna Waiganjo- 1 game, and Algonquin's Muller Kalala- 4 games.

Sheridan will now face the winner of the Humber/Fanshawe game in the Gold Medal game on Saturday at 5 p.m. Algonquin will face the losing team of tonight’s other semi-final game in the Bronze Medal game at 3 p.m. Both games are at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
