TRURO, N.S. - The Mohawk Mountaineers are going to play for the gold medal at the CCAA men's basketball championship in Truro, N.S.
The No. 4-seeded Mountaineers withstood a torrid rally by the
No. 1 ranked University of Northern British Columbia to start the
fourth quarter and prevailed 78-71 on Friday.
The Mountaineers led 66-55 after three quarters, but the
Timberwolves, from Prince George B.C., came out flying with a 12-0
run in the first three minutes of the final quarter.
However, Mohawk settled down and limited UNBC to only four more
points, while scoring 12 themselves.
UNBC all of a sudden seemed to run out of gas in both shooting and
rebounding after their comeback.
Andrew Cicuttini led all scorers with 21 points.
His Mountaineer teammate Manny Campbell got 13 and
was named Mohawk's player of the game. Taylor
Dowhaniuk had 13 rebounds for the winners.
With the victory the Mountaineers now must wait to see who their
opponent will be in the final Saturday night at 7 p.m. Hamilton
time.
The other semi-final Friday night pits No. 2 seeded Mount Royal of
Calgary against No. 3 Ahuntsic of Montreal.
