OSHAWA, Ont. - The Algoma Thunderbirds won their first ever David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night with an 87-76 victory over the George Brown Huskies in the championship final.
Algoma is coached by former Durham College student-athlete Thomas Cory, who was a member of the 1997 national championship winning team who also won back-to-back tip-off titles in 1996 and 1997.
Algoma had a big second half effort in the championship game as
they trailed George Brown by ten points at half-time.
Jovain Wilson of Whitby, Ont. was named the
championship MVP as the Thunderbirds also defeated Fanshawe and St.
Lawrence enroute to the finals. Teammate Mark
Worthham was named a tournament all-star.
Ted Johnson and Sal Abdoulkadar
were named championship all-stars for George Brown.
Centennial won the consolation championship after beating Loyalist
70-43 in the finals. Tristan Stern of Centennial
and Patrik Kalala of Loyalist rounded out the
tournament all-star team.
Durham will open up their regular season on November 2 in Ottawa
against the Algonquin Thunder. The Lords home opener is on Tuesday,
November 6 against the Loyalist Lancers. Durham defeated Loyalist
73-72 in the opening round of the Tip-Off Tournament.
