The top dozen men's basketball teams survived the regular
season, but it's now one-and-done time in the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA).
Four teams have already punched their tickets to OCAA provincials.
They include east regional champion and OCAA championship host
Durham College (17-3), east runner-up Georgian College (14-6), west
regional champion Humber College (17-1) as well as west runner-up
Mohawk College (15-3).
The other eight teams will square off in an elimination round to
determine the other four quarter-finalists. Teams will play an
opponent from the opposite division based on seeding for the
opportunity to advance to provincials.
The elite eight will be on display at the belairdirect OCAA Men's
Basketball Championship from March 6-8 at Durham College in Oshawa,
Ont.
Here is a look at the four qualifying games.
Lambton (10-8, 5th West) at Centennial (12-8, 4th
East)
Saturday, Feb. 28 - 2 p.m.
Two teams on long OCAA medal droughts tip off the OCAA post-season
with a berth to the OCAA championship on the line.
Lambton had positive turnaround this season after going 7-11 in
2013-14. They are led by fourth-year forward Mike
Lucier (Forest, Ont.), who averaged a double double at
17.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. The Lions dropped two home
games to end the regular season, costing them a home playoff
game.
Centennial has struggled in the second half of the regular season
going 4-6. The Colts feature second-year forward Joseph
Wani (Scarborough, Ont.) and fourth-year guard Ian
Francis (Toronto) who are averaging 19.5 and 17.3 points
per game, respectively.
Both Centennial and Lambton lost in the qualifying round last
season. The winner plays Humber in the OCAA quarter-finals.
George Brown (11-9, 6th East) at Fanshawe (13-5, 3rd
East)
Saturday, Feb. 28 - 3 p.m.
The George Brown Huskies and Fanshawe Falcons both competed at
last year's provincials. Only one of the these teams gets the
honour this time around.
Fanshawe may have been overshadowed by the play of Humber and
Mohawk in its division, but the Falcons have put together a strong
campaign. In fact, Fanshawe went 1-1 against both of these teams
during the regular season. Any conversation about championship
contenders should include the Falcons.
The Falcons are led by third-year guard Chris
Stanhope (Markham, Ont.) who averaged 17.3 points per game
in 2014-15.
Fanshawe will have to get by George Brown, who features fifth-year
guard Akai Nettey (Etobicoke, Ont.) and his 18.6
points per game average. The Huskies are winners of four of their
last five games to secure the final seed in the east.
Fanshawe were last awarded an OCAA in 2012 when it received
bronze. George Brown has been medal-less since 1990. The winner of
the qualifier between these teams takes on Georgian in the
quarter-finals.
Niagara (8-10, 6th West) at Seneca (13-7, 3rd
East)
Saturday, Feb. 28 - 6 p.m.
Two teams that have been on a roll to end the regular season are
on a collision course with one program about to be derailed.
The Seneca Sting won six of their last seven games to secure the
third seed from the east. Fifth-year veteran Felix
Adjei (Toronto) has been a key cog in the locomotive,
scoring over 30 points in three of his last six games.
Niagara won five of its last six games then got some help to
secure the final playoff spot in the west. The Knights eliminated
two-time reigning OCAA champion Sheridan with a 99-76 win in the
regular season finale between these teams. First-year forward
Delroy Grandison (Jamaica) scored a game-high 26
points in the victory.
Despite their sub-.500 record, the Knights improved by five wins
this season. Seneca also won more games than 2013-14, when it was
10-10.
Seneca won its qualifying game on home court against Lambton last
year. The winner between Niagara and Seneca takes on Mohawk in the
OCAA quarter-finals.
St. Lawrence-Kingston (12-8, 5th East) at Redeemer (11-7,
4th West)
Saturday, Feb. 28 - 8:30 p.m.
The Redeemer Royals will go where no Royals men's basketball team
has gone before as they play in their first-ever OCAA playoff
game.
As an added bonus, the Royals get to play the game at home.
Redeemer is led by fifth-year forward Calvin
Turnbull (Burlington, Ont.) who averaged 18.4 points and
11.0 rebounds per game.
The St. Lawrence Vikings were winners of 10 straight before losing
their final three regular season games. Fourth-year guard
Andrew Dawkins (Brampton, Ont.) led the Vikings
averaging 20.2 points per game.
The Royals were streaky too, winning nine straight at one point.
Each team just needs a post-season streak of one win to take on
Durham in the quarter-finals.
